Christian Patriotism

In this episode of Preaching and Preachers, Dr. Jason K. Allen is joined by Dan Darling to discuss preaching in a polarized age, pastoral faithfulness in the public square, and the themes behind Dan’s book Christian Patriotism. Together, they explore how preachers can cultivate love of country without confusing the kingdom of God with political power—and how the pulpit can shape Christians who are both convictional and charitable in their civic engagement.

Dan reflects on the responsibilities of pastors to disciple believers amid cultural tension, the dangers of Christian nationalism, and why Christian Patriotism offers a more theologically grounded and historically Christian vision of public life. This conversation will encourage pastors and ministry leaders to preach with clarity, courage, and gospel confidence while resisting the temptation to reduce the Christian faith to partisan identity.

Dan Darling serves as Director of The Land Center for Cultural Engagement at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and is Assistant Professor of Faith and Culture at Texas Baptist College. He is a pastor, columnist, and bestselling author who has written extensively on faith, culture, and public theology. Dan is the author of numerous books, including Christian PatriotismThe Dignity Revolution, and A Way with Words. He regularly contributes to national publications and speaks widely on issues facing the church in today’s cultural moment.
